Welcome to the most challenging part of the Past Tense! Unlike the regular verbs you just studied, these verbs do not follow a pattern. They change their stem completely, so you cannot guess them — you have to memorize them.

The "Ser" vs. "Ir" Mystery: This is unique to Portuguese: the verbs Ser (to be) and Ir (to go) have exactly the same conjugation in the Past Simple!
